Madewith AI.Curatedby humans.

AI is putting illustration, film, music, code and design in everyone's hands. Without judgement it all comes out looking the same. These are the projects that prove it does not have to.

Categories

One main category per project: the format of the finished work, as the public meets it.

All projects

Filter by what the project is for and by how much the machine did.

Purpose

Education & explainers2026

AI History Timeline

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

A free bilingual museum of artificial intelligence, from Ada Lovelace in 1843 to today, with every milestone backed by two press articles, plus a glossary and free courses.

Why it is not slop. A history of AI that refuses to take AI's word for it: every date points to journalism a reader can open.

Software & tools2026

ArtCraft Crafting Apps

Brandon Thomas / ArtCraft

Seven free, open-source desktop apps written in Rust to replace Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom and the rest of Adobe's suite, coded with AI in a matter of days.

Why it is not slop. Honest about being unfinished: the apps are labelled alpha, the code is open for anyone to audit, and the project started a real debate about what AI-written software is worth.

Websites & web apps2026

Australian Culture

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

A guide to understand Australia and Australians: famous Aussies, cities, food, slang dictionary, key dates, brands and curiosities, in English and Portuguese.

Why it is not slop. A cultural guide with a point of view, not a generated listicle. Each entry links to a reference so the reader can check it.

Websites & web apps2026

Brazilian Culture

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

A journey to understand Brazil and Brazilians, built for foreigners: people, cities, food, music, dates and curiosities, in English and Portuguese.

Why it is not slop. Local knowledge shaping what the model drafts. The site explains Brazil the way a Brazilian would to a friend, with references.

Websites & web apps2026

GOATs

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

Who is the greatest athlete of all time in each sport? GOATs, legends, stars and prospects across more than 300 disciplines, each with sources and a verification level.

Why it is not slop. A ranking site that shows its confidence level on every pick. The opposite of a generated top-ten with no sources.

Education & explainers2026

Guia de Argumentação

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

A free course in 151 chapters on how to argue for animals, built from a twelve-volume ethics series and generated as a static site.

Why it is not slop. The AI organised and drafted; a person verified. The site states its sources and its review process.

Websites & web apps2026

Types of Rock

Julio Cesar Prava / BiblioVerse

The theory of evolution applied to rock music: 97 genres on an interactive tree with history, sound, genealogy and the greatest artists of each.

Why it is not slop. A static site generated from data files, so every fact lives in one place and is checked by a person before it reaches the page.

Software & tools2025

Bitchat

Jack Dorsey

A messenger that works with no internet, hopping between phones over Bluetooth, written by Twitter's co-founder in a weekend with an AI coding agent.

Why it is not slop. Included as a landmark of agent-written software, flaws included. The lesson is in the open code and the public correction.

Video & animation2025

El Eternauta

K&S Films & Netflix, with Eyeline Studios

The first Netflix original with generative AI in its final footage: a building collapse in Buenos Aires that the show's budget could not have covered the traditional way.

Why it is not slop. Included as a landmark, with the labour debate it started. One shot, disclosed by the company itself, in a series that nobody mistook for slop.

Games & interactive2025

fly.pieter.com

Pieter Levels

A multiplayer flight simulator in the browser, coded almost entirely by prompting, that went viral and sold in-game ads.

Why it is not slop. Proof that vibe coding can ship a product if a person with taste stays in the loop. The game is crude on purpose and honest about it.

Video & animation2025

Kalshi NBA Finals ad

PJ Accetturo for Kalshi

A deliberately chaotic thirty-second spot generated with Veo 3 for about two thousand dollars of prompting, aired during the 2025 NBA Finals.

Why it is not slop. The ad leans into the weirdness of the tool instead of hiding it, and the maker published the whole process. A landmark for cost, not a model for taste.

Writing & publishing2025

The Way of Code

Rick Rubin & Anthropic

The Tao Te Ching rewritten as eighty-one meditations on vibe coding, each paired with an interactive artwork the reader can remix by prompting.

Why it is not slop. A producer famous for removing things applies the same taste to code. The book is about the posture, not the prompts.

Games & interactive2025

Whispers from the Star

Anuttacon

You keep an astronaut named Stella alive on an alien planet by talking to her, by text, voice or video call. There is no quest line; what you say is the game.

Why it is not slop. A big studio betting a whole game on conversation. Critics asked whether it is a game at all, which is the kind of question a real experiment provokes.

Video & animation2024

Air Head

Shy Kids

A short film about a man with a balloon for a head, one of the first narrative pieces made with Sora.

Why it is not slop. The premise is built around what the tool cannot do well: a head that is supposed to look wrong. The humour and the pacing are entirely human.

Software & tools2024

Cal AI

Zach Yadegari & Henry Langmack

Photograph your plate and the app estimates its calories. Built by two eighteen-year-olds, it passed five million downloads in eight months by the founders' count.

Why it is not slop. Included as the clearest case of a tiny team turning a model into a product people pay for. The claimed ninety percent accuracy is the thing to question.

Games & interactive2024

Infinite Craft

Neal Agarwal

A browser game where you drag two words together and a language model decides what they become, forever.

Why it is not slop. The AI is the mechanic, not the aesthetic. There is no generated art, just a design idea that only a language model could sustain.

Games & interactive2024

Oasis

Decart & Etched

A playable Minecraft-like world with no game engine: every frame is generated by a model from your keyboard and mouse input, in real time.

Why it is not slop. Included as a landmark: the first widely played demo of a game that exists only inside a model. Its instability is the point, and the training data raised fair questions.

Graphic design & branding2024

Pedigree Adoptable

Colenso BBDO & Nexus Studios for Pedigree

A model turns amateur shelter photos into studio-quality portraits, so every Pedigree ad becomes an ad for a real dog waiting in a shelter nearby.

Why it is not slop. The AI is a photographer's assistant for animals that could not afford one. According to the campaign, half of the featured dogs were adopted within two weeks.

Music & audio2024

Rep. Jennifer Wexton's voice

Jennifer Wexton & ElevenLabs

A congresswoman who lost her speech to a neurological disease addressed the House of Representatives in a clone of her own voice, built from recordings made before her diagnosis.

Why it is not slop. Voice cloning as accessibility, used by the person whose voice it is, in the most public room in the country.

Writing & publishing2024

Sympathy Tower Tokyo

Rie Kudan

The novel that won Japan's Akutagawa Prize, after which its author said about five percent of the text was taken verbatim from ChatGPT.

Why it is not slop. The machine's text is in the book because the book is about the machine. Disclosed by the author at the ceremony, not discovered later.

Software & tools2023

Be My AI

Be My Eyes & OpenAI

Blind and low-vision users photograph anything and receive a detailed description, with a human volunteer one tap away.

Why it is not slop. The AI answers a real need faster than a person can, and admits when a person is needed.

Websites & web apps2023

Chatbot Arena

LMSYS (UC Berkeley)

Two anonymous chatbots answer the same prompt, you pick the better one, and millions of such votes produce the leaderboard the industry watches.

Why it is not slop. The most honest measure of AI quality is a human who does not know which model is talking. The site made that a habit.

Writing & publishing2023

Death of an Author

Aidan Marchine (Stephen Marche)

A murder-mystery novella written with three language models, published by Pushkin Industries with the process in the open.

Why it is not slop. A novel about AI authorship that is itself an experiment in AI authorship, with the author's name and method on the cover.

Music & audio2023

Elf.Tech

Grimes

Grimes released a tool that turns any recording into her voice and promised fifty percent of royalties to anyone who makes a successful song with it.

Why it is not slop. The opposite of the unauthorised AI Drake track that prompted it: consent, credit and a split, written down before anyone pressed generate.

Software & tools2023

Glaze & Nightshade

Ben Zhao's lab, University of Chicago

Two free tools that let artists protect their images: Glaze hides their style from models, Nightshade poisons unauthorised training. Nightshade was downloaded 250,000 times in five days.

Why it is not slop. AI research pointed at AI, on the artists' side. The clearest example of the technology being used to say no.

Data & science2023

GraphCast

Google DeepMind

A weather model that produces ten-day global forecasts in under a minute and beat the leading physics-based system on about ninety percent of the measures tested.

Why it is not slop. Useful in the plainest sense: earlier warnings of cyclones and extreme weather. The paper says what it cannot do, and the forecasters keep the responsibility.

Software & tools2023

Khanmigo

Khan Academy

A tutor that refuses to give the answer: it asks questions, hints and checks the student's reasoning instead.

Why it is not slop. A chatbot designed around what good teaching is, not around what the model wants to do. Restraint as a feature.

Websites & web apps2023

Make Real

tldraw

Draw a rough interface on a whiteboard, press one button, and a working prototype appears next to your sketch, ready to click.

Why it is not slop. Drawing stayed the interface. The model fills in the code, the human keeps the pen.

Music & audio2023

Now and Then

The Beatles

The last Beatles song, finished from a 1970s John Lennon demo after machine learning separated his voice from the piano.

Why it is not slop. AI as a restoration tool, used only to recover something that already existed. The clearest case of technology serving the work.

Games & interactive2023

Suck Up!

Proxima

You are a vampire who must talk his way into people's homes; every neighbour is a language-model character who can be convinced or offended.

Why it is not slop. Open-ended dialogue is the whole game, and the comedy comes from the player, not from the model.

Video & animation2023

The Frost

Waymark

A twelve-minute science-fiction film in which every shot started as a DALL·E 2 image, later animated.

Why it is not slop. Instead of hiding the artificiality, the film uses it as the texture of a frozen world. The limitation becomes style.

Websites & web apps2022

Contexto

Nildo Junior

The Brazilian answer to Semantle: guess the secret word by meaning, ranked by a language model, which became the big word game of early 2023 far beyond Brazil.

Why it is not slop. A better version of someone else's idea, made for a language the original ignored. The ranking is friendlier than the score, and the world adopted it.

Websites & web apps2022

Craiyon (DALL·E mini)

Boris Dayma

The free, open image generator that produced the wonky nine-image grids which flooded social media in mid-2022, months before the big models opened up.

Why it is not slop. The project that let the public touch image generation first. Its ugliness was part of the charm, and it was never sold as more than it was.

Websites & web apps2022

Google Flood Hub

Google Research

A public site with river flood forecasts up to seven days ahead, built for regions without gauges, covering eighty countries since 2023.

Why it is not slop. A warning you can act on, in places that never had one. The site shows uncertainty and the forecasts are checked by people who sign off on them.

Websites & web apps2022

Have I Been Trained?

Spawning (Mat Dryhurst & Holly Herndon)

A search engine that lets artists check whether their work is among the billions of images used to train image generators, and opt out of future training.

Why it is not slop. AI infrastructure turned toward the people it was built on. Consent as a product, before any law required it.

Graphic design & branding2022

Heinz A.I. Ketchup

Rethink for Kraft Heinz

Heinz asked an image model to draw ketchup in every style it could think of, and almost every result came back shaped like a Heinz bottle.

Why it is not slop. One of the first ad campaigns to use image generation as the idea rather than the decoration. The joke only works because the brand already owned the shape.

Websites & web apps2022

Semantle

David Turner

A daily word game where every guess gets a score for how close its meaning is to the secret word, computed by a word-embedding model.

Why it is not slop. A game that could only exist with a language model, and that uses it for one thing: a number. Nothing generated, nothing to look at, just meaning as a mechanic.

Video & animation2022

The Crow

Glenn Marshall

A dance performance filmed in a studio and re-painted frame by frame by an image model guided by the prompt of a crow.

Why it is not slop. A real body and a real choreography anchor every frame. The AI adds a painterly layer, it does not replace the performance.

Video & animation2022

The Heart Part 5

Kendrick Lamar & Dave Free, with Deep Voodoo

A single-take music video in which Kendrick Lamar's face morphs into O.J. Simpson, Kanye West, Will Smith, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle as the verses change perspective.

Why it is not slop. Deepfakes used as a storytelling device by the artist himself, in the open. The technique serves the lyric about identity, not the other way around.

Websites & web apps2022

The Infinite Conversation

Giacomo Miceli

An endless, never-repeating conversation between synthetic versions of Werner Herzog and Slavoj Žižek, with a new segment added every day.

Why it is not slop. A piece about the plausibility of nonsense, made before the chatbot boom. It works because the audience already expected both men to be hard to follow.

Illustration & image2022

Théâtre D'opéra Spatial

Jason M. Allen

The Midjourney image that won first place in the digital art category of the Colorado State Fair and started the debate about AI in art competitions.

Why it is not slop. Included as a landmark, not as a model. It shows how much iteration sits behind a single frame, and how little the law recognises that.

Video & animation2022

Top Gun: Maverick, Val Kilmer's voice

Sonantic & Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer, who lost his speaking voice to throat cancer, returned as Iceman with a synthetic version of his own voice built from old recordings.

Why it is not slop. A voice clone made with the actor, for the actor. Restraint in how much it is used is what keeps it moving.

Art & experimental2022

Unsupervised

Refik Anadol

A wall-sized moving painting at MoMA, generated from the museum's own collection and reacting to light, sound and movement in the lobby.

Why it is not slop. An AI artwork about the archive it was trained on, shown by the institution that owns the archive. The data has a face.

Illustration & image2022

Zarya of the Dawn

Kris Kashtanova

A short graphic novel whose images were generated with Midjourney and whose text, layout and story were written by its author.

Why it is not slop. The case that drew the line between generated material and authored work. The comic is readable, personal and clear about how it was made.

Data & science2021

AlphaFold Protein Structure Database

Google DeepMind & EMBL-EBI

Predicted 3D structures for over 200 million proteins, free to anyone, covering nearly every organism with a sequenced genome.

Why it is not slop. Every result carries an honest uncertainty measure. The most useful AI output ever published, and it says where it might be wrong.

Software & tools2021

Deep Nostalgia

MyHeritage with D-ID

Upload an old family photo and the face blinks, turns and smiles. Tens of millions of ancestors were animated in the first weeks.

Why it is not slop. A deliberately narrow use of face animation, with the guardrails stated up front. It moved people because of what it refused to do.

Music & audio2021

Lost Tapes of the 27 Club

Over the Bridge

New songs in the style of Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors, generated to talk about mental health in the music industry.

Why it is not slop. The imitation is the argument: these artists should still be alive to write their own songs. The campaign is about the absence, not the output.

Software & tools2021

Merlin Bird ID: Sound ID

Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Hold up your phone and the app names the birds singing around you, live, even when several sing at once.

Why it is not slop. A free, scientific tool that turns listening into learning. The data comes from the community and goes back to it.

Websites & web apps2020

Blob Opera

David Li with Google Arts & Culture

Four blobs sing opera as you drag them up and down, harmonising in real time with voices learned from sixteen hours of four real singers.

Why it is not slop. Joyful, instant and honest about what you hear: not the singers, but a machine's idea of them. Still the most played machine-learning toy on the web.

Writing & publishing2020

Pharmako-AI

K Allado-McDowell

The first book co-written with GPT-3: a dialogue about ecology, memory and consciousness in which both voices are printed.

Why it is not slop. Transparent by design. The reader always knows who is speaking, and the book is about that boundary.

Video & animation2020

Unfinished Votes

Change the Ref & McCann Health

Joaquin Oliver, killed in the Parkland shooting, appears in a video asking young people to vote for gun reform, made with his parents.

Why it is not slop. The hardest ethical case in the catalogue, included because consent, authorship and purpose were handled in the open.

3D, product & space2019

A.I. chair

Philippe Starck, Kartell & Autodesk

A chair designed by asking generative software to hold a body with the least material, then edited by a designer until it looked like a chair.

Why it is not slop. A real product in stores, with a visible dialogue between the algorithm's logic and a designer's taste.

Games & interactive2019

AI Dungeon

Nick Walton / Latitude

The text adventure that first showed a language model could run an open-ended story with a player.

Why it is not slop. A format invented for the technology rather than an old format with AI sprinkled on top.

Video & animation2019

Dalí Lives

The Dalí Museum & Goodby Silverstein & Partners

Visitors to the Dalí Museum in Florida are greeted by a life-size Salvador Dalí who talks about his life and takes a selfie with them.

Why it is not slop. A deepfake used in the open, with the subject's estate, to teach. The technology serves the museum, not the other way around.

Video & animation2019

Malaria Must Die

Malaria No More & Synthesia

A campaign video in which David Beckham's lips are synced to nine languages so that survivors' voices speak through him.

Why it is not slop. Synthetic media used to pass the microphone, not to put words in someone's mouth.

Music & audio2019

PROTO

Holly Herndon

An album recorded with Spawn, a neural network Herndon trained on her own voice and on a choir of collaborators.

Why it is not slop. The training data is consensual and the model is a collaborator with a credited role. The record sounds like nothing else.

Websites & web apps2019

This Person Does Not Exist

Phillip Wang

A single page that shows a new photorealistic face on every reload, none of which belongs to a real person.

Why it is not slop. The site is a demonstration of a risk, built to make it visible. Minimal, honest and still the best explainer of synthetic media.

Art & experimental2018

Portrait of Edmond de Belamy

Obvious

The first AI-generated artwork sold by a major auction house: a blurred portrait signed with the model's loss function, sold at Christie's for 432,500 dollars.

Why it is not slop. A landmark more than a masterpiece. It forced the art market to decide whether a chosen output is a work, and the credit dispute over the borrowed code is part of the lesson.

Software & tools2018

Seek by iNaturalist

iNaturalist (California Academy of Sciences & National Geographic)

Point the camera at a plant, bug or animal and the app identifies it on the device, with badges for kids and no account required.

Why it is not slop. Curiosity rewarded instantly, backed by a real scientific database. A camera that makes you look closer.

Software & tools2018

Te Hiku Media speech tools

Te Hiku Media

A Māori broadcaster built its own speech recognition for te reo Māori from recordings donated by the community, under a data licence the community controls.

Why it is not slop. The opposite of scraping. A model that exists to keep a language alive, owned by the people who speak it.

Illustration & image2017

Deep Empathy

MIT Media Lab & UNICEF

Photos of Boston, London and other cities rendered as if they had suffered the war in Syria, to make distant suffering feel near.

Why it is not slop. Image generation with a measured goal and a measured result. The pictures exist to move people toward a cause, and were tested for it.

Graphic design & branding2017

Nutella Unica

Ogilvy Italia & Ferrero

Seven million jars, each with a unique label generated from a set of patterns and palettes designed by the agency.

Why it is not slop. Generative design in service of a brand system. Variety without losing identity, which is what most AI design fails at.

Software & tools2017

Seeing AI

Microsoft (Saqib Shaikh)

A free app that narrates the world for blind users: reads text and documents, recognises people and products, describes scenes and currency.

Why it is not slop. Designed by the people who need it, years before chatbots. Still the model for what assistive AI should feel like.

Websites & web apps2016

Quick, Draw!

Google Creative Lab

A game that asks you to doodle an object in twenty seconds while a neural network guesses what it is, which quietly collected the largest doodle dataset in the world.

Why it is not slop. It taught millions what a classifier is without a single explanation, and gave the data back to the public.

Art & experimental2016

Sunspring

Oscar Sharp & Ross Goodwin

A nine-minute film whose screenplay was written entirely by a recurrent neural network and performed straight by human actors.

Why it is not slop. A deliberate experiment with the machine's incoherence, made before the hype, and still funnier than most AI films since.

Graphic design & branding2016

The Next Rembrandt

ING, Microsoft, J. Walter Thompson, TU Delft, Mauritshuis

A new 'Rembrandt' portrait computed from 346 paintings and printed in 3D to reproduce the brushstroke relief.

Why it is not slop. An early and careful study of a master's style, framed as research, with the museum in the room.

How we choose

Three questions. A project needs a good answer to all of them.

  1. 01

    Is it useful?

It solves a problem, teaches something, moves someone or entertains on purpose. Being generated is not a reason to exist.

  2. 02

    Is it innovative?

It shows a way of using AI that was not obvious before: as a mechanic, a restoration tool, a collaborator, a microphone.

  3. 03

    Is it free of slop?

A person chose, cut, checked and signed it. No default aesthetics, no unreviewed text, no waxy faces nobody looked at twice.

What is slop?

Slop is AI output published without judgement: the plastic skin, the six-finger hand, the paragraph nobody read, the site that looks like every other site. It is not a style, it is the absence of one. Every project here had a human who said no to the first result.

Three degrees of AI

Every entry says how much the machine did, because the honest answer is part of what makes it good.

Know a project that belongs here?

Send the link, who made it and where the human came in. We review every suggestion by hand.
